Born in 1934, Shankar Ghosh commenced his formal artistic training in 1951, at the Indian Art College and thereafter continued at the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta from 1952 to 1957. Noted painters Gopal Ghosh, Dilip Dasgupta and Sculptor Pradosh Dasgupta were amongst teachers who helped shape this formidable talent.
Shankar Ghosh's work has been commended for their aesthetic designs and each creation is imbued with an ethereal quality.
His sculptures are inspired by various facets of his environment, the human form and different types of shapes. The sculptures are usually medium size and very personalized with monumental quality in its forms. He feels his sculptures take him into an imaginary realm, where all the encounters are one to one interactions with these art forms, far beyond the materialistic world and the realities of daily existence. While creating these masterpieces, moulding them, erecting them and placing them on a pedestal what he experiences is sheer exhilaration.
He has held six solo exhibitions. First show was in 1963 in Calcutta then after in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Participated in over fifty group and annual exhibitions at Lalit Kala Academy (Delhi), Academy of Fine Arts (Calcutta), Birla Academy of Art & Culture (Calcutta) and All India Fine Arts & Crafts Society (Delhi) and in many other galleries.
